AP Spanish Language and Culture is a college-level course that develops your ability to communicate in Spanish across the three modes of communication: interpretive (reading, listening, and interpreting visuals), interpersonal (two-way conversation), and presentational (formal speaking and writing). Throughout, you explore the products, practices, and perspectives of Spanish-speaking cultures using authentic sources.
The course is organized around six thematic units: Families and Communities, Language and Culture, Art and Creativity, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, and Global Contexts.
Like AP Music Theory, the College Board does not assign a fixed percentage of the exam to each unit. Teachers may sequence the units freely, and content from all six themes appears across the exam. Instead, the exam is weighted by section: the redesigned exam is 50% free response and 50% multiple choice. The free-response section is built around a course project: the project prompt and source materials are released each January via AP Digital Portfolio, and includes a Project Presentation (20%), a Project Q&A (15%), and an Argumentative Essay (15%). The multiple-choice section splits evenly between Listening (25%) and Reading (25%).
