AP Precalculus is a college-level course that centers on functions as models of dynamic phenomena. Instead of treating precalculus as a grab bag of algebra topics, the course builds a single unifying idea: a function is a rule that relates two quantities changing in tandem, and every function type can be understood through graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations.
The course is organized into four units: Polynomial & Rational Functions, Exponential & Logarithmic Functions, Trigonometric & Polar Functions, and Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors & Matrices. Units 1, 2, and 3 are assessed on the AP Exam; Unit 4 contains additional topics that some schools teach but that never appear on the exam.
