Argumentative Essay · Ensayo argumentativo · Los contextos globales

Fuente 1 (artículo): An opinion piece argues that delaying climate action to protect short-term economic interests only increases long-term costs, citing infrastructure damage and public health impacts from extreme weather.

Fuente 2 (tabla): Projected costs of climate inaction versus climate investment in a hypothetical region.

EscenarioCosto estimado en 20 años
Sin inversión climática$4,200 millones
Con inversión climática$1,100 millones

Investing now is projected to cost far less than the price of inaction over 20 years.

Fuente 3 (audio): In a recorded interview, a local official explains that while climate investment does require difficult short-term budget tradeoffs, communities that acted early have avoided far greater disruptions, and that citizen advocacy played a key role in pushing local government to act.

A
State your thesis. Clearly present your own position on whether local governments should prioritize climate action despite short-term economic sacrifice, in one or two sentences, in Spanish.

✓ Model answer (earns the point)

(In my opinion, local governments should prioritize the fight against climate change, since short-term economic sacrifices are much smaller than the costs of inaction in the long term.)

Why it scores: The thesis takes a clear, defensible position on the specific question asked. A reader knows immediately what the essay will argue.
B
Integrate all three sources. Write one body paragraph that uses evidence from Fuente 1, Fuente 2, and Fuente 3 to support your position, and cite each source (e.g., “según la fuente 1…”).

✓ Model answer (earns the point)

Why it scores: All three sources are cited by name and used as evidence for the writer's position, including specific figures from the data table. Simply summarizing each source without connecting it to the argument would lose points.
C
Organize and connect. Write a short concluding sentence that restates your position, and list three cohesive devices (transitions/connectors) you would use to link ideas across the essay.

✓ Model answer (earns the point)

(In conclusion, although climate investment demands immediate sacrifices, both the economic evidence and the testimony of communities that have already acted show that it is the most responsible decision in the long term.)

(both… and…), según la fuente… (according to source…).

Why it scores: A logical concluding statement that echoes the thesis without repeating it word for word, plus a variety of connectors that link claims and evidence across the essay, earns full credit for organization.
