Toxins concentrate as they move up the food chain
Bioaccumulation builds toxin levels within a single organism over its lifetime, but biomagnification compounds this effect across trophic levels — each predator inherits the accumulated toxin burden of everything it has eaten. This is why top predators (including humans, in some food webs) face the highest exposure risk, even when the original pollutant source seemed dilute and harmless at the bottom of the food chain.

Not all toxicity is about a single lethal dose
LD50 measures acute, short-term lethality — useful for comparing chemicals, but incomplete. Endocrine disruptors and persistent organic pollutants can cause serious harm through chronic, low-dose, long-term exposure that LD50 testing alone wouldn't reveal. A chemical can have a high (seemingly "safe") LD50 and still pose serious environmental and health risks through other mechanisms.

Pollution management follows a hierarchy of prevention over cleanup
The waste management hierarchy (reduce → reuse → recycle/compost → dispose) reflects a broader principle that runs throughout Unit 8: it's almost always better to prevent pollution at the source than to treat or clean it up afterward. Sewage treatment's three stages and landfill engineering (liners, capping) exist precisely because complete prevention isn't always possible — but minimizing waste generation in the first place remains the most effective strategy.
