Topic 4.1
Plate Tectonics
Earth's lithospheric plates and their movement over the mantle — the driver behind mountains, ocean basins, earthquakes, and volcanoes at plate boundaries and hotspots.
Topic 4.2
Soil Formation and Erosion
How weathering of parent rock, climate, organisms, and time build soil into distinct horizons — and how wind, water, and poor land management strip topsoil away.
Topic 4.3
Soil Composition & Properties
Soil texture, porosity, permeability, and nutrient content, and how these properties affect water-holding capacity, plant growth, and agricultural suitability.
Topic 4.4
Earth's Atmosphere
The layered structure of the atmosphere (troposphere, stratosphere, etc.) and the composition that supports life and regulates temperature.

About Unit 4

Unit 4 turns from biology to geology and atmospheric science — the physical Earth systems that set the stage for everything else in APES. You'll learn how plate tectonics builds mountains and triggers earthquakes and volcanoes, how soil forms and is lost to erosion, how the atmosphere and global wind patterns regulate climate, and how solar radiation, geography, and El Niño/La Niña cycles drive seasons and regional weather.

This unit is roughly 10–15% of the AP Environmental Science exam and takes about 11–12 class periods. It's heavily weighted and content-dense — expect diagram-based questions on plate boundaries, wind belts, and soil horizons.
