Identify the clef and key signature first. Most Unit 1 questions hinge on reading pitch correctly: the same line means a different note in each clef.
Count steps carefully. Remember B–C and E–F are natural half steps. A miscounted half step is the most common way to spell a scale or key wrong.
For meter, ask how the beat divides. Top numbers of 6, 9, or 12 mean compound meter: the beat is a dotted note, not the bottom-number value.
