Key topics at a glance

Ozone Depletion

CFCs break down stratospheric O3, letting more UV radiation through. Montreal Protocol (1987) phased out CFCs — a major success story.

The Greenhouse Effect

Greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, water vapor) trap outgoing infrared radiation, warming the surface. Natural and necessary — the problem is the enhanced effect.

Rising Greenhouse Gases

Fossil fuels (CO2), livestock/rice (CH4), fertilizer (N2O), deforestation (less CO2 absorption) — all human-driven increases.

Global Climate Change

Rising temps, melting ice, sea level rise, extreme weather, shifting species ranges — wide-ranging downstream effects.

Ocean Warming & Acidification

Warming → coral bleaching. Acidification ("the other CO2 problem") → less carbonate for shell-builders. Two separate CO2-driven problems.

Invasive Species

Non-native species with no natural predators outcompete native species, disrupting food webs.

Endangered Species

Habitat loss is the #1 cause of endangerment. Endangered Species Act provides legal protection.
