The basics

What it covers: Population ecology — growth models, survivorship, carrying capacity, age structure, and human demographic change.

Exam weight: About 10–15% of the AP Environmental Science exam — one of the most heavily weighted units.

Key topics at a glance

Generalists vs. Specialists

Generalists survive in many conditions (raccoons); specialists need narrow conditions (koalas) and are more vulnerable to change.

r- vs. K-Selected Species

r-selected: many offspring, little care, fast maturity (insects). K-selected: few offspring, high care, slow maturity (elephants).

Survivorship Curves

Type I: low early mortality, dies old (K-selected). Type II: constant mortality rate. Type III: high early mortality (r-selected).

Growth Models

Exponential: J-curve, unlimited resources. Logistic: S-curve, growth slows near carrying capacity (K).

Limiting Factors

Density-dependent (disease, competition) intensify with population size; density-independent (natural disasters) don't.

Age Structure Diagrams

Wide base = rapid future growth. Rectangular shape = stable population. Used to predict a country's population trajectory.

Total Fertility Rate

Average children per woman. Replacement level ≈ 2.1 in developed countries — needed to keep population stable.

Demographic Transition Model

Four stages as countries develop: high birth/death rates → falling death rates (rapid growth) → falling birth rates → low birth/death rates (stable).
