Defenders argue that explanation adapted to the audience is not distortion but responsible communication: if information cannot be understood, it cannot be acted on.

Consider the bacteria in your body right now. You are, in a very real sense, more bacteria than human: your body hosts approximately 38 trillion bacterial cells, compared to 30 trillion human cells. Most of these organisms are not enemies — they are tenants, performing essential functions that keep you alive. But among this vast population, there are pathogens: bacteria that, given the right conditions, can cause serious illness.

For decades, antibiotics functioned as a remarkably effective eviction notice. When a bacterial infection took hold, a course of the right antibiotic could eliminate it within days. The problem is that bacteria do not stay evicted. They adapt. They reproduce rapidly — a single bacterium can produce one million descendants in eight hours — and evolution, which in humans takes thousands of years, happens in bacteria over days or weeks. When antibiotics kill 99.9% of a bacterial population, the 0.1% that survive are, by definition, those with natural resistance to the drug. They reproduce. Their descendants inherit that resistance. The antibiotic that once solved the problem has now, through use, trained a population of bacteria to resist it.
