TOPIC 5.1 Beneficial & Harmful Effects Innovations bring benefits A computing innovation is anything that includes a program as a key part. They advance medicine, education, communication, and science. Effects can be physical, social, or economic. …and harms The SAME innovation can help and harm. Harms are often UNINTENDED and hard to predict in advance. A single group may benefit while another is harmed. Weigh both sides Example: social media connects people (benefit) but can spread misinformation and harm privacy (harm). Every computing innovation has both beneficial and harmful effects, often unintended. It affects individuals, communities, and whole countries. What causes it • Income & cost of devices/service • Geography (rural vs. urban) • Age, education, and disability • Government policy & infrastructure Why it matters Access affects opportunities in education, jobs, health, and civic life. The divide can WIDEN existing social and economic inequalities. Efforts to close it improve equity. The digital divide is unequal access to computing — it can widen inequality. Bias can be embedded at ANY stage: design, data collection, or use. Often unintentional — but still harmful. A common source: the data If training data isn't representative of everyone, results favor some groups over others. Reduce bias by testing with diverse users and reviewing data sources. Bias at scale affects many people Because software runs at huge scale, a biased program can systematically disadvantage large groups of people. Computing bias can enter at design, data, or use — test with diverse users to reduce it. The Internet makes this possible at massive scale. Examples • Wikipedia — shared knowledge • Crowdfunding a product or cause • Reviews & ratings; citizen science • Reporting real-time traffic/maps Power and cautions Crowdsourcing taps diverse perspectives and huge collective effort to solve problems quickly and cheaply. But contributions vary in quality and accuracy, so results often need verification. Crowdsourcing gathers ideas, content, or funding from many people over the Internet. Using others' material requires permission or a proper license, and credit. Creative Commons & open source licenses let creators share on set terms. Privacy & ethics Programs that collect personal data raise privacy and consent concerns. Plagiarism, piracy, and unauthorized access are unethical and often illegal. Always cite sources and honor licenses. Legal ≠ ethical Something can be legal yet still harmful or unfair. Responsible developers weigh the ethical impact, not just the law. Respect copyright, licenses, and privacy — cite sources and honor others' work. Sharing it online carries risk — data can be stored, sold, or stolen. Once online, data is hard to fully remove. Staying safe • ENCRYPTION scrambles data so only authorized parties can read it. • Strong passwords & multi-factor auth. • Beware PHISHING, malware, & scams. Keep software updated to patch weaknesses. Encryption: symmetric vs. public key SYMMETRIC uses one shared key; PUBLIC-KEY uses a public key to encrypt and a private key to decrypt.
